İştar Gözaydın - Free!

Professor Istar Gozaydin has been for many years a prominent member of the European Religion and Politics community. She is an intellectual, a human rights activist and an important scholar who has written significant and illuminating contributions on Turkish society and politics. Istar was fired from her job shortly after the abortive July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey and in December 2016 she was arrested on charges that have still not been clarified.
Over the last two months, her friends and colleagues have made numerous efforts for her release, but without success. The stage has now been reached of a mass petition which we hope will attract signatures from scholars from Europe and elsewhere in the world to demand her release from prison. We hope very much you are willing to sign the petition and if you could circulate it among your colleagues too for their signatures that would be much appreciated.

If you willing to sign the petition below, then please email Ahmet Erdi Öztürk at aerdiozturk@gmail.com who is collecting signatures. Continue

The perspective of our continent seems to be restricted to the clash between a bankrupt establishment and the emergence of reactionary nationalisms.
On March 25, on the day of an extraordinary European Council in Rome, we will strongly intervene in public discourse to show another option is open.
In an important evening of political theatre, we will present proposals capable of saving Europe from itself and we will beging building a progressive international alliance to take them forwards.

My portrait of Erdogan in a Brooklyn wall

Despite an arm and a leg amputated, D. never stopped smiling

The consequences of a mine on the body of D., a boy mutilated while he was trying to flee from Mosul, met this morning at the Emergency hospital in Erbil.

Isis left hundreds of booby traps and land mines everywhere, to slow the advance of Iraqi army and to punish the civilians fleeing.

Despite an arm and a leg amputated, D. never stopped smiling.

The Apology - Tiffany Hsiung #HRWFFLDN

Grandma Gil in South Korea, Grandma Cao in China, and Grandma Adela in the Philippines were amongst thousands of girls and young women who were sexually exploited by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, many through kidnapping, coercion and sexual slavery. Some 70 years after their imprisonment, and after decades living in silence and shame about their past, the wounds are still fresh for these three former ‘comfort women’. Despite multiple formal apologies from the Japanese government issued since the early 1990’s, there has been little justice; the courageous resolve of these women moves them to fight and seize their last chance to share first-hand accounts of the truth with their families and the world, and to ensure that this horrific chapter of history is neither repeated nor forgotten.

The Settlers - Shimon Dotan #HRWFFLDN

The Settlers cracks open the world of Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank: their daily lives, their worldviews, and their position within Israel. With uninhibited access, the film captures the casual zealotry, racism, and untroubled certainty of many settlers in this contentious and controversial space. The existence and development of Israeli settlements in the West Bank is complex and elusive, and increasingly wild and tragic. Along with personal profiles, Dotan unpacks the history of the settlements, laying out the facts with extraordinary care and lucidity, to allow us to see the progression of actions and reactions that have led to the current volatile situation.

They Call Us Monsters - Benjamin Lear #HRWFFLDN

In this powerful documentary, Juan, Jarad and Antonio, ages 14 to 16, face decades in prison in California, where juveniles older than 14 can be tried as adults for violent crimes. While incarcerated, they sign up for a screenwriting class and while collaborating on a short film that collectively fictionalises their lives and dreams, all three inadvertently grant the audience a remarkable insight into their minds and experiences. While the gravity of their crimes haunts every frame, these youths are still children. To penal reform advocates, they are kids. To the law, they are adults. To their opponents, they are monsters.HRW Film Festival in London

We'll Be Alright - Alexander Kuznetsov #HRWFFLDN

Alexander Kuznetsov’s photographer’s eye is beautifully evident in his depiction of Yulia and Katia, who have lived in institutions their entire lives. Their dreams are simple—to live in an apartment, have a job, have a relationship and children, and choose the food they eat and the clothes they wear. And yet gaining these fundamental rights depends on a long and painful bureaucratic process, forcing them to meet nearly impossibly high standards for release. Transferred from orphanages directly to neuropsychiatric institutions in Siberia, Russia when there was no family to care for them—they have been labelled as unfit for life in the real world based on reports written when they were children. With immense sensitivity for its subjects, We’ll Be Alright highlights just how arbitrary and abusive the Russian care system can be.

Tickling Giants - Sara Taksler #HRWFFLDN

"When you go after a joker, the joke is on you." - Bassem Youssef, film subject, Tickling Giants

Dubbed, “The Egyptian Jon Stewart,” Bassem Youssef hosts the most popular television programme in the Middle East. In the midst of the Egyptian Arab Spring, Youssef left his job as a heart surgeon to become a full-time comedian, and his show ‘Al-Bernameg’ (The Show) now brings in 30 million viewers per episode. In a country where freedom of speech is becoming increasingly restricted with each regime change, Youssef and his courageous staff of young writers develop creative methods to non-violently challenge abuses of power. Enduring physical threats, protests, and legal action, the team test how far they can take the joke.

Lambchop | Flotus Tour 2017

Lambchop, originally Posterchild, is a band from Nashville, Tennessee. Lambchop is loosely associated with the alternative country genre. AllMusic referred to them as "arguably the most consistently brilliant and unique American group to emerge during the 1990s".

Never a band with a "core" lineup, Lambchop has consisted of a large and fluid collective of musicians focused around its creative centre, frontman Kurt Wagner. Initially indebted to traditional country, the music has subsequently moved through a range of influences including post-rock, soul and lounge music.

Whatever the style, the characteristic mood of Lambchop's music is evoked by Wagner's distinctive songwriting: lyrically subtle and ambiguous, the vocals melodic but understated. American Songwriter described Wagner's lyrics as "witty and deeply insightful."

They were the backing band for Vic Chesnutt on his 1998 album, The Salesman and Bernadette.

Former bass player Marc Trovillion died of a heart attack in October 2013, aged 56.
